I want to monitor my network in lan?
We have started a new office of 50 systems. At present we don't have any server. We have taken an Internet Leased Line for internet connection. Now I want to monitor the whole LAN by sitting in one system. I gone through some tools which asks for installing agents in all systems and server in one system. I can't install those agents in all 50 systems. so please tell me one nice tool for monitoring(I want to block downloading videos from YouTube ,downloading torrents, etc.,) the whole LAN.I want to send the reports daily to y manager.Help me......

You need to consult different Vendors & need to install Firewall related to your setup.Once Firewall
is installed,it will help you in stopping the Unwanting Download & Network Monitoring.

Many good routers can block sites but you need a router with those functions or a system wide firewall appliance! Once installed, block what you want!

One way is to configure your router accordingly, but that will implement on all.
Other is to use a good antivirus like Symantec End point protection then you can manage everything from your computer.
You dont need a server to use Symantec endpoint protection manager and it also has reporting options to give you all the reports.
OR you can use websense firewall.
there are plenty of products depending on what you want.
If you just want to block websites there are other ways, technical stuff so no one can open that website from their computer... free of cost solutions that require some change in settings.
But if you want centralised monitoring go for a paid production like symantec or any other antivirus and get the job done.

This can be monitored via WIRESHARK it's a nice tool you have to make a computer as server and install two lan cards one lan card is connected to a switch and it will share whole internet to 50 systems ,from dsl you have to connect to first lan card , and after isntalling wireshark you have to select the second lan card , and while users are on all 50 machines you can filter the data with ip address or protocols you can even see their login information as encrypted but can be Decrypt with certain tools, and blocking can be done in routers and in the method i mentioned you can install filtering software inside the server pc , which will filter youtube and all and when filtering use all ips youtube have more than 10 ips torrent can be blocked via port , the wireshark tool can save logs you can send that log to manager , but continuously monitoring is not fair and another tool called http://www.lanvisor.com/ you can see remote desktop without interrupting them or hidden !! Good luck !!

If you cannot install and keep 'agents" on every machine, then the only solution is a network device, like a commercial firewall, or a free Linux firewall.
In both cases, you should hire professional help to install it and train you on how to use the firewall.

I've not read all the answers (apologies) but here goes my advice

first you can install software on all so long as you install either teamviewer or handycafe (client) on each one time only

teamviewer allows you to do everything on a pc connected to the internet from your own computer as if you are there in person

handycafe - yes it's an internet cafe software but let me explain -
users can log in with their own set id/password (created by the server)
you can use the server to block access to pc's
you can use the server to block websites and applications
you can view what they are accessing

any more questions read here http://www.handycafe.com/features.php

I used to own/maintain/run an internet cafe and used Handycafe

You have some groundwork to set this up. This only works with business enterprise equipment, you cannot do it with "home" network devices.

An inline tool is pretty invasive. If you have a firewall, it might be logging things. You setup a syslog server to capture those logs. If you have a local DNS server, you can also point those logs to your syslog server. This gives you some history of things.

If your router is enterprise class, you can use flow monitoring to get the net traffic. There are several free tools that will take the flow scans and map them to type and ip and present them graphically. Your router must support flows, however.

If you have managed switches, most have port mirroring. You port mirror ALL your traffic through this port. Tripwire would work, but that captures all traffic and it would quickly overrun any disk drive. I haven't used it, but some people run is PRTG. They key for any of this to work is port mirroring, so you can see the traffic and not be invasive.

"WFilter" is exact what you want, it enables you to monitor and filter all client computers from a mirroring port in your switch. No client agent is required, free version available.
